Placerville Businesses
The Magnolia Saloon was constructed in the 1860's and rebuilt one time after the 1899 fire destroyed much of Placerville. It was operated by James McKay, Sr. and his nephew, James McKay Jr. Later their nephew, Steve Mackin, operated it as an ice cream parlour during prohibition.
Purchased by Henrietta Penrod and restored by the Placerville residents, it is now owned by the city of Placerville and serves as the Henrietta Penrod Museum. It features stories, actifacts, and photos of the history of the Placerville and surrounding areas. Recently, the grandchildren of Steve Mackin donated to the museum, the original mirror that hung behind the bar.
The Magnolia Saloon is a contributory structure to the Placerville Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
Cathcart's Store was located next to the Ellis Hotel. It was destroyed at least 3 times by fires that swept the town: 1899, 1900, and 1933. The 1933 fire started in the back part of the store. It spread to the Ellis Hotel, but they were the only two structures destroyed in that fire.
For many years it was owned by the Martin Cathcart, who first engaged in the boot and shoe business before starting the mercantile. His daughter, Elizabeth Robison, continued his work at the mercantile. She was followed by her daughter, Henrietta Penrod. It also served as the post office.
It is also a contributory property to the Placerville Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
